At Matino, in the province of Lecce, on 29 July 1895 was where Eriberto Scarlino was born.
He was a composer, a teacher and a concert artist. He performed in Italy and abroad both as a soloist, and in chamber music (with violinists De Vito, Bignami, Crepax, Fanfulla Lari, Maglioni, Priano, Zepparoni, violist Formentini, cellists Cassadò, Grossi, Oblach as well as with Raoul von Koczalski). He taught Piano in the “Liceo Musicale Benedetto Marcello” in Venice (1921) and at the “Arrigo Boito Conservatory” in Parma (1926) and the “Luigi Cherubini Conservatory” in Florence (1937). He was Director of “Liceo Musicale Giuseppe Verdi” in Alessandria D’Egitto from 1933 to 1935. He died in 1962.
Scarlino composed piano works and chamber music such as the “Preludio e Fuga” for strings and organ, the “Quartetto in mi minore”, and the symphonic poem for Orchestra “Le Villi”.
Many critics wrote about him: Giannotto Bastianelli, Arnaldo Bonaventura, Ildebrando Pizzetti (“a clever mind and a great sensibility”), Giulio Bucciolini, Carlo Cordara, Adelmo Damerini, Edgardo Del Valle de Paz, Alberto Gasco, Cesare Paglia (Gajanus)...
Tito Aprea said “His work will remain forever unforgettable”, while
Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli: “I remember him as great musician, teacher and colleague”.
Rodolfo Caporali noted that “I remember his noble eloquence and the
equilibrium between Classicism and Romanticism”, while
Dario De Rosa described him as “An old-times gentleman”.
Pietro Farulli spoke of “One of the most fascinating and appreciated
Maestros”.
And Luigi M. Personè remembered: “An artist who can give richness and
relief for the soul to his audience “.
Pietro Scarpini told of : “Great artistic skills, great kindness”and
Maria Tipo of: “A real gentleman”.
